OBD Device

An OBD device plugs into a vehicle’s diagnostic port, which is standard on most vehicles manufactured since 1996.  When installed, the OBD device accesses the vehicle’s various subsystems to provide information such as vehicle status, diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) and various other performance data.

The OBD will work on most vehicles manufactured in the US since 1996 and in the EU since 2002.

You can find the port below your dashboard near the steering column and above the pedals. Please always refer to your owner’s manual for the vehicle OBD port location.

The OBD device will work with most light duty vehicles including SUVs, vans and most pick-up trucks.

Once installed, the OBD device is powered through the vehicle’s diagnostic port.  No other wiring or installation is required.  When the vehicle’s ignition is turned off, the OBD device enters a very low power sleep mode that won’t drain your vehicle’s battery.

When installed in the vehicle, OBD device power consumption is about 10 mAh. For example, if you connected an OBD device to a new vehicle car battery, with the device running continuously it would take ~15,000 hours or ~1.7 years for the OBD device to fully discharge the battery).

Getting Started

You can access the Fitcar Fleet Management tool using a desktop computer, laptop or tablet.  The application is optimized for Chrome and Firefox browsers although others are also supported. Once you create your account, simply plug the OBD devices into your vehicle and take a drive.

LEDs on the Fitcar OBD device will light up when it is correctly plugged into the vehicle’s diagnostic port.

Once the OBD device is registered within the Fitcar Fleet Management tool and the device is plugged into the diagnostic port on your vehicle, the vehicle needs to be driven on a short trip of at least 1 mile to synchronize the information. However should the vehicle not register on the first trip it may require another trip to fully update on the platform.  The device may need to update its software which may extend this process.

Using the Fitcar Fleet Management Tool

Please refer to the autocavo Fitcar Fleet Management Reference Guide on use of the tool.

A trip is measured starting when the vehicle’s ignition switch is turned on and ending when the vehicle ignition is turned off. A trip summary is provided that shows the miles driven, trip duration, fuel consumption, fuel economy, maximum speed and driver score events.  Trip duration includes actual vehicle drive time as well as vehicle idle time.

For vehicles where the odometer cannot be read directly by the OBD device, the system calculates the mileage accumulated in your trips using GPS in the OBD device. It automatically rounds trips to the nearest mile and may result in a disparity between the fleet management tool odometer reading and the actual vehicle odometer reading. Often this issue will be resolved after several trips. If not, please manually update your vehicle’s odometer in the fleet management tool.

Additionally, blockage of the GPS signals could cause a disparity between the estimated mileage and actual odometer readings. GPS signal reception can be blocked when inside a building, in areas with tall buildings or by other terrain features resulting in potential errors in calculating your estimated mileage. If this issue persists, please contact support@autocavo.com.

In most instances when the “check engine” or “service engine soon” light is illuminated, it is an indication of a malfunction of the vehicle’s computerized engine-management system triggered by a DTC and will result in a notification sent to the fleet management tool. Some older vehicles have a check engine light that illuminates based on the vehicle’s odometer reading regardless of engine operation or without generating a trouble code.

Depending on your vehicle make and model, one of the following* will be captured:

  • Current Fuel Level & Average Fuel Consumption in mpg (for vehicles that provide both fuel level & consumption)
  • Current Fuel Level (for vehicles that provide fuel level but not consumption)
  • Average Fuel Consumption in mpg (for vehicles that provide fuel consumption but not fuel level)
  • No Fuel Data (for vehicles that don’t provide any fuel data)

*Note: Vehicle-specific features are based on the vehicle make and model. Trip data for supported vehicles will include fuel consumption to include the gallons of fuel used for the trip and the miles per gallon value.

The driver score is derived from how the vehicle is being driven to provide insights that can help drivers improve their driving style and save on gas. The score takes into consideration elements such as the actual vehicle speed versus the posted speed limit on a given roadway along with high speed events (above 75 mph or 120 km/h), harsh accelerations (above 7.5 miles or 12 km per second) and harsh braking/deceleration (above 8.7 miles or 14 km per second).

The driving score can be negatively influenced when vehicles are operated in dense, stop-and-go traffic conditions.
